Regional and global bandwidth expansion boom

International demand for bandwidth grew sevenfold between 2006 and 2010. This growth has been met through infrastructure investments in undersea network cables, long distance networks, and data centers, globally carried out by companies like Level 3.

Driven by a positive macroeconomic environment, the Latin American region presents in general a very favorable scenario for growth and expansion of multi-Latin and multi-national companies; even for domestic companies in search of new horizons.

We frequently notice how regional companies grow or start operations in new territories. This would not be possible, inter alia, if those companies’ business applications were not appropriately in place, i.e. if they had not a systems platform to support their core business.

Although computing centers may be enhanced, moved, or replicated in each new operation, from a business standpoint this would be probably inefficient and impracticable because of the high costs involved.

In parallel we witness the boom of Social and Contents Networks, including video or multimedia applications, based on an Internet Infrastructure. This growing phenomenon for Internet applications has made bandwidth demand grow by sevenfold between 2006 and 2010 (according to a research by Telegeography, see figure below).

This bandwidth growth is only possible thanks to continuous investments that global carriers like Level 3 make on their sub-sea cable infrastructure, transmission equipment, long distance networks, data centers and metro networks on an ongoing basis. Level 3 owns one of the two largest private sub-sea cable networks in the world.

Additionally, Level 3 owns the first integrated IP-based global network in the world, and is currently the only global Tier 1, facilities-based provider in Latin America. In Latin America, Level 3 delivers services to 85 markets. Compared with other regional carriers, Level 3 is second to none since competitors do not deliver services in so many places worldwide like Level 3 does, reaching over 450 cities in 45 countries.

Let’s go back now to the importance of having systems platforms where critical applications for companies’ core business are assembled. Accordingly, those companies that have “conquered” or determined “to conquer” territories beyond their boundaries need global telecommunications networks to access their key systems platforms. And to start this conquest with confidence, companies may rely in Level 3 as their ally and strategic partner.
