Our Thoughts on Cybersecurity

Level 3 has just released a white paper titled Perspectives on Cybersecurity.  Not only does it provide an overview of basic cybersecurity principles, it presents our view of proposed legislation. Additionally, we discuss the role of service providers and the government in protecting our nation’s most sensitive networks and applications. And we also cover an exhaustive list of omissions which we believe must be addressed.

Recently, cybersecurity media coverage has been on the rise, with this week’s particularly alarming “Data breach more stressful than divorce, say IT managers”. It’s pretty clear we could all use to better understand the dynamics of cybersecurity. Our white paper can help you learn the following:

What is a hacktivist?

What effect moving applications and data into the cloud will have on your security posture?

What keeps your CSO/CIO up at night? Securing smartphones and tablets?  Supporting mobile access to enterprise applications from a growing list of handheld devices? Staying current with the wide range of Android operating systems alone is quite a challenge.

To learn more about these and other important security topics, read our white paper!

If you are already an experienced cybersecurity specialist, this white paper will take you beyond basic cybersecurity 101 and provide details on our own views. We also set the stage for upcoming trends and developments in “Future Directions in Cybersecurity.” Check it out.

Special Note: October is the Department of Homeland Security’s National Cybersecurity Awareness Month. This year’s theme is “Shared Responsibility.” I urge everyone to visit the Department of Homeland Security’s webpage where you will find resources that will help you determine whether you have the proper security processes in place. Happy reading!

  1. Excellent paper, well laid out and a very informative read. Had not heard about that happening to the RSA or L-3 Communications. One of the biggest challenges people face in this industry is the realism that Microsoft is not a trusted computing provider. There are a multitude of Open Platforms better suited to the task, but people cling to Windows based networking which is flawed by design and nearly every product on Sale in a PC store comes bundled with Windows. I still remember a time when they released XP and suddenly people with no password set-up where finding themselves on-line with Windows NetBIOS File & Printer sharing fully enabled. Gee thanks Microsoft!

People are suddenly clinging to the idea of cloud computing but as your paper points out not such a great idea as they then place all the eggs in one basket.
